FORMAL HEDGES ARE USEFUL FOR SCREENS, BOUNDARIES AND WINDBREAKS Beech, laurel, yew and box are perfect for formal hedges. When clipped into shape, in both large and small gardens, they
can create beautiful natural screens and windbreaks. In a large garden, you can create ‘rooms’ and link them with
arches. Formal hedges can be clipped back to reduce the amount of space they take up. The dark needles of yew (Taxus baccata)
or the shiny foliage of laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) make a good background for an ornamental garden. Box (Buxus sempervirens)
provides a low, formal edge to the vegetable garden or along the sides of paths. Click here for a list of plants suitable for formal hedging.

INFORMAL HEDGES PROVIDE VARIETY AND BLEND WITH THE LANDSCAPE Informal hedges are useful for
boundaries as they need more room to grow into their natural shapes. They are allowed to flower and go to seed (berries) which
attracts butterflies and birds. Hazel, field maple, hawthorn and guelder rose make a good mix in a native hedge. Click here for a list of our plants suitable for informal (native) hedging.

BUYING HEDGING Our hedging plants are sold bare-root
or root-balled. This means that plants are grown in fields and can only be moved when they are dormant from the end of October
to the end of March. This is the ideal planting time. Small plants are sold bare-root while the larger ‘INSTANT HEDGING’ comes root-balled – this means that it has a ball of soil around the roots and will establish better.
